What is the Keto Diet?

The Keto Diet has not only been taking over Hollywood but also Google searches in 2017.  The diet has been described as an “Atkins on Steroids”.

Celebrities such as Halle Berry, Kim Kardashian, Adriana Lima, and Lebron James have all been using it to get in shape.

So, what is the Keto diet?  First, ketosis is a state where your body is so low on carbs that it forces your body to burn fat as fuel.  Doctors and nutritionists say the key to the ketogenic diet is to target the correct percentages in terms of carbohydrate and fat intakes.  Keto dieters have gone as low as 10% or 20 grams of carbohydrates in terms of daily intake.  Nutritionists say that 20 grams is equivalent to only a slice of bread, half of bagel, or half of muffin. Keto study participants have observed feeling healthier overall with more energy.  Fitness experts say the workouts can also be more effective while on the Keto diet with the sustained energy.

Participants seeing the greatest results have gotten as much as 70% of their calories from fat. Medical experts recommend that the fat intake should come primarily from healthy fats such as coconut oil or avocado as opposed to butter or bacon.  The challenge for some is getting enough healthy fats while on the ketogenic diet.

In terms of veggies, nutritionists say below-ground plants such as potatoes contain as much as three times the carbohydrate content than above-ground vegetables.  Therefore, it is recommended that Keto dieters eat leafy green above-ground vegetables such as spinach, kale, broccoli, Brussel sprouts, cabbage and cauliflower.  Avoid below ground vegetables such as potatoes, carrots, and corn.

In addition, there are also on-going studies looking into the anti-cancer properties of a ketogenic diet.

Supplements such as BHB (Beta-hydroxybutyrate) salt minerals, MCT Oil, and Coconut Oil have been shown to help the body get its nutrients.  Research has shown that BHB mineral salts helps the body absorb the ketones. Healthy fats such as MCT Oil and Coconut Oil provide the body much needed calories while on the diet.

Finally, doctors recommend that people who do go on the ketogenic diet follow it for some months and then cycle off once the body has shed the pounds.

How Do I Get Started?

A typical Keto Diet includes green vegetables, berries, nuts and seeds, oils, eggs, fish and meats.  However, a vegetarian Keto Diet would remove the fish and meats from the meals.  Foods to stay away from include bread, pasta, sugar, milk, corn, beans, and rice.

Ketosis can only be achieved by giving the body necessary ingredients of a keto-diet and avoiding carbs to prevent the body from switching to alternative sources.

The ketogenic diet is a high fat, low carb style of eating consisting of about 70 to 80 percent healthy fats, 10 to 20 percent protein, and 5 percent carbohydrates.
